You don’t have to go to the gym to get exercise.  Even 30 minutes to an hour of walking, daily, can get your heart rate up and help you lose weight.  Ideally, you want 30-60 minutes 5 times a week of rigorous aerobic exercise, but if you can’t fit that in, that’s okay. The key is to get regular physical activity.  Where exercise is concerned, something is always better than nothing.

3. Alter your diet
You can make small changes to your diet without needing to resort to eating yogurt and celery all the time, or spend exorbitant amounts on diet foods and pills.  By incorporating healthy choices into your diet (for example, a whole wheat turkey sandwich with fruit for lunch instead of eating fast food or something junky), you can improve your health AND see weight loss results. 

4. Try a detox diet
“Detox” is a common term heard among dieters these days.  A detoxification (detox) diet is basically a way to cleanse your body of excess toxins by fasting or eating very little for a week or more.  Usually, detox diets have you ingest only liquids (soup, juice, water) so that your body can focus on cleansing itself.  Practically instantaneous weight loss is a common result of these diets, as you’ll quickly lose water weight, though it takes at least a day before you’ll start burning excess fat.

5. Intermittent fasting
This is another method of “dieting” that’s becoming increasingly popular.  Intermittent fasting is basically going for long periods of time (15-24 hours) without food, and then eating larger amounts of food after the fast is over.  For example, you might only eat once a day, in the morning or evening, but eat a large amount at your desired eating time.  Intermittent fasting is arguably the best way to lose weight fast eating your favorite foods because if you only eat once a day, you don’t have to worry so much about calorie counting.  You’ll naturally eat less if you only eat once a day.  The downside to this method is that you may feel sluggish until you get used to it.

Trying to lose weight when the rest of your family loves to eat?
Hi,

I am seventeen, 5′5", 140 pounds, and a pant size 9.

It would be a dream come true if I were to lose 10 pounds. An even greater dream if I were to lose 10 more of that.

My family loves to eat. When my mother notices that I am not eating as much food as I normally do, she makes an effort to cook my favorite foods and she gets extremely upset when I don’t eat as much. Admittedly I have weighed the exact same number of pounds for 5 years now, only difference is that back then it was all fat and inactivity and to this day I am trying hard to eat well and exercise; but I need your help.

Please analyze my habits and tell me what I need to improve:

On a typical school day, my breakfast is two eggs scrambled on a piece of bread, and a multivitamin.

my lunch is a sandwich, one fruit, two granola bars and a juice box; normally I will only go through 3 out of 5 of these.

My supper is variable. Sometimes it is home cooked organic meals, sometimes it is fast food.

My family goes to fast food on the weekends because we prefer our weekend outings to take as little time as possible.

I drink water, juice and tea; I hardly drink soda. I am lactose intolerant and never drink milk or ingest dairy products and I make up for it with vitamins and enriched orange juice. I do not smoke, do drugs or drink alcohol.

I work out a minimum of 4 times a week being on two sports teams. These training sessions with my teams can be from a minimum of half an hour long to a maximum of two and a half hours long.

Please tell me what I need to do further to help me reach my goal. And of course, help me find a way to deal with a family that, for the most part, does not support me in my desire to lose weight. Everyone in my family is overweight and BMI wise I am just on the edge of normal range.

This is pretty sugar heavy. You don’t get need two granola bars and a juice box. Eat something with protein instead. Nuts, cheese, etc.

Talk to your parents about wanting to eat healthier. If they pressure you into making unhealthy choices, go grocery shopping yourself and prepare your own meals.

Honestly..I don’t think thats fat and you sound pretty healthy..
The best thing to do would be to have a serious chat with your parents about it, tell them you want to do something about it and let them know how much it means to you.
Try low carb. Dr. Atkins worked perfect for me and theres alot of good choices of food

Everything I’m going to tell you works. I have 5 percent body fat on me. I’m 5 foot 5 and I weigh 155 pounds. I’m pretty muscular and that’s where most of the weight is from.

You say you’re on two sports teams so you got the exercise part down.

Don’t think in terms of losing 10 pounds, think in terms of losing body fat. If you’re under 15 percent body fat, then you’re an athlete. For women, 8 – 10 percent is what female fitness models have (men have 4 to 6 percent). How do you measure your body fat? Get some tape measure (body tape is best, but tape measure will do) and go to http://www.healthcentral.com/cholesterol/home-body-fat-test-2774-143.html.

After you find out your body fat. Do some math.

Take your body weight – your body fat percentage * body weight. That’s your lean body weight. Multiply that by 80 percent and that’s how many grams of protein you should be getting each day (especially if you’re an athlete).

You have only 3 meals a day, so I’m pretty sure you don’t get your protein. Your breakfast has 17.4 grams. A turkey sandwich with cheese, whole wheat bread and 3 turkey slices + cheese has 35 grams of protein. Those were for just ball park figures.

Eating right is about 75 percent of the lose weight equation. Believe it or not, the more you eat, the more weight you will lose. If you eat healthy meals in small portions, your metabolism will increase (small meal is two fist sizes). People who eat two big meals a day, have a slow metabolism. Their brains think they are starving, so their metabolism is slowed down and their calories get stored into fat, because their bodies think in the future, food will be scarce.

When you have more meals in smaller portions (like 5 or 6 small meals throughout the day, every 2 to 3 hours), your body increases its metabolism and your body turns calories into energy.
Also drink 2 cups of water before each meal and throw some flaxseeds into your breakfast and dinner to prevent cravings and promote healthy blood flow in the brain. Have caffeinated green tea during meals to further increase your metabolism and give you healthy cancer and disease fighting antioxidants. To further your metabolism make sure you get your vitamin C.

In addition, to eating healthy and jogging/running 20 minutes 3 times a week (you’re on sports teams so don’t worry about that), you need to do a full body workout. The reason for this is you need to build up muscle around your body. muscle takes up a lot less room than fat does in your body. In addition, muscle makes your body firm and also muscle burns fat when your body is at rest. That’s right, when you’re doing nothing, your muscle tissue burns fat, so the more muscle you get on your body the more fat you will burn. Don’t worry about getting buff. That’s not possible for women unless they take 150 percent of their lean body mass in grams of protein. You’ll be taking 80 percent of your lean body mass in grams of protein, so you won’t get buff – you’ll just be a lean hot babe.

A full body workout consists of working out your chest, biceps, triceps, back, legs, abs and lower back. Doing a squat workout, is the same thing as if you ran for 30 minutes! The best way to go about doing a full body workout routine, is to hire a personal trainer. However, that would cost 1500 to 2000 dollars for a good 3 to 4 weeks of training. You can lose the weight! Keep a journal and write down everything you eat at the times you eat them at. This way there won’t be any mindless eating. Set one day of the week to make your food for the entire week. The less you think about what to eat, the less you’ll eat bad. When you have all your meals ready for you to eat, you won’t have to think much. A journal is very important – DO IT!

Don’t tell yourself I’ll do this tomorrow. Tomorrow doesn’t exist. It’s only today. Get a note book, go find a full body work out routine, figure out how you’re going to get 80 percent of your lean body mass in protein in 5 or 6 meals throughout the day, tell your mom to buy different things (like turkey, 100 percent whole wheat bread, grilled chicken), plan to make your food on every Saturday (or whatever day you want). IF YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, then it takes planning, it takes work, but eventually it’ll just be routine.

I don’t think that you are overweight for your height. Maybe you are hoping to be a size which is not the right one for you. Look at your mother and father and see what their frame is, small,medium or large? You can’t be that different as we are a mix of our parents, so don’t beat yourself up trying to achieve a look that is against your natural build. Your health will suffer if you try too hard. Be your natural self, and love yourself as you are, everyone else loves you for being you.
If you really don’t get support from your family in this, just go out somewhere when the others eat, and give anything you don’t want to eat to the birds, they will welcome the food, but remember if you worry things look worse, but your mom is supporting a child she loves, never think that your family don’t care – they do!
